International Baccalaureate at Upper Canada College

Learn the letters “IB” and earn serious respect

IB_250It used to be a secret password for kids whose parents travelled a lot — often they were diplomats. Today, the International Baccalaureate, developed in Switzerland in 1968, is a rigorous high school diploma with a universal curriculum — taught the same way in 1,500 schools in 120 countries.

Guess what? The IB earns you serious respect.

Consider this. Harvard’s admission department says the IB diploma is the qualification they value most. That’s because the program is set to extremely high standards and is graded externally.

The IB program is taught in your final two years of high school. You graduate with the IB diploma, plus your Ontario high school diploma. Due to UCC’s size, we have a wide range of Standard Level and Higher Level courses. That means we’ve got something to appeal to everyone, whatever makes you tick. Pick your own path.

UCC always places highly among IB schools worldwide. And your IB score is a strong indicator of future success. We hear, all the time, that the experience of writing the required extended essay in the IB program sets you up for confident, quality work at university. You’ll find yourself ahead of your peers when it comes to the essay-writing game.

You’ll also be ahead when it comes to being a “global citizen.” That’s to say, you’ll have a broad, sophisticated world view. And that can give you an edge, when it comes to international business and travel opportunities, or just getting along with, and understanding people from all over the world.

The IB requires you to study a second language, encourages the pursuit of art and culture, and gives you a chance to travel and help out in communities in Toronto, Africa, China and beyond.

All Canadian universities accept the IB Diploma. In Europe, it’s considered at least equal to (and in many cases preferable to) credentials for university admission such as British A Levels, the French Baccalaureate, and Germany’s Abitur. Students who do well in their IB diploma have many more opportunities to impress university admission departments anywhere in the world.

So what are you waiting for? If it’s respect, you’ve come to the right place.
